The most common first purchase of fine jewelry is Matrimony, the engagement ring.
Traditionally, the Gentleman would propose with a diamond ring to be worn on the left-hand ring finger. During the ceremony the couple would exchange wedding rings. The bride receiving a second ring/band to accompany the “engagement” ring and the Groom would receive a ring/band as well.

It can be a “stand alone” ring without an accompanying band. A colored gemstone ring instead of a diamond ring, or even a plain band.
